The theme of an electric shock was inspired by the restoration of our home in Berkeley. The house featured old and fragile wiring. By doing much of the restoration ourselves, the possibility of a shocking surprise was ever present. The cartoony theme was inspired by black and white cartoons made in the 1920's, as our house was built in 1922. Using eggshells to make bulging eyes was just a good idea.
The Back Story
In 2010 we wanted to send a card to friends and family to celebrate the holidays. We were inspired by a scene from the movie "Julie and Julia", where Julia Child and her husband Paul prepare one of their whimsical annual Valentine's Day cards. So, we thought, why not send a Halloween card?! Getting a Halloween card is unusual, and we hoped people would really enjoy them. And we definitely get a lot of laughs while preparing them! We've used John's original photography in all but one card, and now we find ourselves constantly on the look-out for more spooky scenes! As a holiday, Halloween has become secular and is easily shared across cultures. We can be memorable, we can mark the beginning of the holidays, and, of course, we can be as silly as needed!
